Mother’s Day Activities Guide

Put a smile on mum’s face (or pass on to someone who may need some inspiration) and create a fabulous day for Mother’s Day. Read on below for our top suggestions of how to celebrate in and around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire – or in the comfort of your Grandhome home!

Brunch/Breakfast

Breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day just got creative! Start off the day with some breakfast and brunch inspiration from local Aberdeen food blogger, Foodie Quine. From apple, cinnamon and maple syrup waffles to bacon and bagel ‘mum’, you can’t go wrong – however perhaps a little help from Dad or older siblings for the younger ones wouldn’t go a miss.

Looking for somewhere to eat on the way to the next big adventure? Crema Café in Bridge of Don offers up a delicious selection of pancakes, crepes and eggs benedict to get you ready for the day ahead. Or why not visit on the way home for some tasty desserts from milkshakes to cookie dough. There is something for everyone!

Art Gallery and Art at Home

Renovated in 2019 Aberdeen Art Gallery has one of the finest art collections in the UK – including works by Joan Eardley, Barbara Hepworth, Samuel Peploe and Tracey Emin. Perfect for Mums with a creative eye, you can simply browse the gallery or get the whole family involved and go on an art safari around the gallery to find all the animals hiding in paintings, sculptures, jewellery and ceramics. Also, see if you can spot Maternité by George Hitchcock.

For more information on opening times, check out Aberdeen Art Gallery’s website.

Keep the creative flow at home and create a nostalgic photo album. Gather your supplies, your photos of mum, and create a story with your favourite memories. Don’t forget to caption each photo with special memories to make it even more unique.

Baking

Get the family together in the kitchen for a good old-fashioned bake-off. The possibilities are endless! Head over to Foodie Quine for inspiration.  From banana, strawberry and honey muffins to Tunnock’s teacake rocky roads, there is something for everyone. You could even challenge yourself with former Bake-Off winner Candice Brown’s chocolate mud cake recipe from The Press and Journal. Everyone can help too, whether their job is reading the recipe, stirring the ingredients, or licking the spoon!

Mother’s Day walk

Get active with mum and go for brisk afternoon walk around the Grandhome area to walk off all your baking treats. Just 1 mile from Grandhome you can find the River Don Heritage Trail, where the family can discover the rich Aberdonian history as you stroll along the River Don’s beautiful waterside scenery. The river has been used as a power source to drive processes and machines for hundreds of years, and whilst all textile mills are now closed, there are machinery and buildings along the trail which stand testament to this fine part of the city’s history.

Top tip! Get your cameras ready for any Scottish wildlife you might spot whilst there, including otters, kingfishers, herons and ospreys.
